The shift from Cancer Season to Leo Season is always a powerful one. Of all the planets and their rulerships, Cancer is to the Moon as Leo is to the Sun. The changing season is—quite literally—night and day. We emerge from the depths of our emotions, having spent time floating in the waters of comfort, and walk into the light of the Sun. Much like a dip in the ocean, we come back to land and feel the warmth all around us, the water still on our bodies, glistening as the heat dares it to evaporate. We are tired, but we are renewed. From the passive and introspective Cancer Season, we set ourselves ablaze in the active and extroverted Leo Season—the spotlight is now on us. This Leo Season we are called not just to give ourselves grace, but to possess radical confidence in trusting our hearts and embracing our potential.

When the Sun enters Leo, it joins Mercury in the sign of the lion while the cosmic lovers trail behind—Venus quite comfortable in sensitive Cancer and Mars in detriment in Taurus. With Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn already retrograde, Jupiter is the next to join them, stationing retrograde on the day of the New Moon in Leo on July 28th. There’s something inherently special about New Moons in Leo. Leaders of lunations are determined by the ruling planet of whatever sign the Moon is in. As such, a New Moon in Leo is led by the Sun in Leo—hand in hand with the Moon who is in detriment there. Leo can sometimes receive criticism for the flashy and sometimes selfish attitude that the energy of the Sun exudes. But the Sun did not choose to be the center of the universe—it just is. And without it, we’d be in the dark and nothing would thrive. When Leo hypes its loved ones, that support is unmatched. As such, during a Leo New Moon, the Sun joins the Moon in the dark, allowing itself to dim so that the two may embrace and begin a new cycle together. In the darkness of a New Moon in Leo, we are encouraged to ask ourselves what we can create when our sense of self and our emotions are aligned, especially in the absence of something to light the way. It asks us to trust ourselves as our guiding light, knowing our spark of inspiration will soon be illuminated. Jupiter in Aries is lending support to that vision, stationing retrograde to bring focus back to what we had learned during its time in Pisces.

Mercury enters its exaltation in the sign of Virgo between the New and Full Moon, grounding our thoughts back into tangible reality. Whatever ideas have been igniting since the New Moon, we’re speaking into existence under Mercury’s influence. Both Venus and Mars move to their next signs during Leo Season, Venus entering Leo alongside the Full Moon on August 11th, but not without an opposition to Pluto before her departure. Venus in the final degrees of Cancer faces off with Pluto in Capricorn, begging us to ensure we have filled our own cups before we undergo the work. Under the light of the Full Moon in Aquarius, Venus enters Leo, asking us to be fearless in what we love and stand in our power—knowing our own light does not dim anyone else’s, but inspires others to do the same. This Full Moon forms a t-square to Uranus in Taurus, aligned with the North Node. Both the Moon and the Sun feel the tension from Uranus, guaranteeing some unpredictability in the way we receive things that are meant for us—a release from that tension in Scorpio, near the South Node. Things that may have once brought us comfort or held us back might be the key to unlocking our next transformation that brings us closer to our purpose (Pro-tip: Don’t text your ex unless it’s for closure or to get your shit back).

In the final days of Leo Season, Mars enters Gemini—where it will be enjoying quite an extended stay thanks to its imminent retrograde. Its ingress to Gemini is marked by the Moon also in Gemini, who is forming sextiles to both Venus in Leo and Jupiter in Aries. As we begin to move out of Leo Season and into Virgo Season, this Mars ingress provides foreshadowing of the transit’s highlighted theme of hyper-fixation and communication—the kind that stokes the flames of passion and inspires almost boundless potential in the pursuit of limitless possibilities. The Sun in Leo reminding us that if we can dream it, we can do it. Are you ready to put in the work?
